Project in the Wissenschaftsbox [Science box] of the WWU [University of Münster] with Students of the Academy of Design and Crafts of the HWK [Chamber of Crafts and Skilled Trades] Münster, 2004
Concept: Constanze Unger
Location of the Wissenschaftsbox: Am Drubbel, in front of the Lambertikirche [St. Lambert’s church] Münster
Passers-by can take a look into the container through the window at the wide front side. A small experimental workshop comes into view, which is used by two to three craft students from time to time. They decorate everyday commodities of little value and pieces of material with small ornaments of leaf gold. The service, based on craft and practical lab skills, ‚refines’ the original objects. These are then put on display and offered for sale.
The project title alludes to the Italian design studio Alchimia and the design strategies of Ettore Sottsass, which have been put into practice since the mid-1970ies. Followers of this line of tradition experiment with “three-dimensional theses”, where low-grade materials are combined with valuable ones and where „cheap“ commodities are decorated with ornamentation and kitsch in order to develop them into design models and objects of high esteem.
